MONTHLY WRAP UP & TBR

For the month of January I was able to finish SEVEN books. This is a huge shock to me as, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get through all of Red Rising and Golden Son to read anything else. The reason that I thought like that is because I am a full time university student maintaining four full time courses. I guess when you truly love something you make time for it!

Books I finished
The Scorch Trials by James Dashner
The Death Cure by James Dashner
Red Rising by Pierce Brown
Golden Son by Pierce Brown
Riding the Odds by Lynda K Scott [arc]
Best Friend through Eternity by Sylvia McNicoll [arc]
This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers (review coming soon!)

Now onto February, I have so many books that I want to read, I wish I was a much faster reader then I am so that I could just get through everything that I wanted to! I have a couple arcs I would like to start and do reviews on before they are released as well. I will just make a list of seven books I am hoping to get through!

TBR List
Please Remain Calm by Courtney Summers
Petronella and the Janjilons by Cheryl Bentley [arc - releases Feb 18th]
Soul Crossed by Lisa Gail Green [arc - releases Feb 25th]
Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
Cress by Marissa Meyer
The Selection by Kiera Cass

If I receive anymore arcs due to release in February I will have to bump the books that are already out but I have heard so many great things about the Lunar Chronicles!

GUEST REVIEW - BOY, SNOW, BIRD

Today I am doing something a little different. This is a guest post, a review written by my sister-in-law Sara who you can find on goodreads here. Sara and I have a different taste in books, so I thought it would be fun to post some of her reviews for books I wouldn't read. More of a variety for people because not everyone is into YA!

"In the winter of 1953, Boy Novak arrives by chance in a small town in Massachusetts, looking, she believes, for beauty—the opposite of the life she’s left behind in New York. She marries a local widower and becomes stepmother to his winsome daughter, Snow Whitman.
A wicked stepmother is a creature Boy never imagined she’d become, but elements of the familiar tale of aesthetic obsession begin to play themselves out when the birth of Boy’s daughter, Bird, who is dark-skinned, exposes the Whitmans as light-skinned African Americans passing for white. Among them, Boy, Snow, and Bird confront the tyranny of the mirror to ask how much power surfaces really hold.
Dazzlingly inventive and powerfully moving, Boy, Snow, Bird is an astonishing and enchanting novel. With breathtaking feats of imagination, Helen Oyeyemi confirms her place as one of the most original and dynamic literary voices of our time." - goodreads

Sara rated this book 2 stars out of five

This review does have a spoiler in it!
I have put the spoiler in white text, highlight to read!

I can start by saying that this book was a pretty great disappointment for me. From the blurb on the inside cover of this book, I was expecting a new-age retelling of Snow White that integrated 1950's race agendas and a complex, in-depth story line. But the description of this novel blows it way out of proportion. Boy, Snow, Bird is the story of mainly one girl, Boy, who escapes her father to locate to a new town and restart her life.

The beginning of this novel makes it seem as though it has great potential, which very quickly falls through. After reading the first 100 pages not noticing how far into the book I was, I was taken aback by the fact that I was a third done the book and I had no ties nor feelings for any of the characters whatsoever. Each character introduced is rushed and bland. Their lives seem dull, without personality or love. I really noticed this when Boy marries Arturo and I realized that I barley even noticed him as a relevant character, having no sense of his character nor their relationship. I felt no sense of connection between the couple, actually no sense of connection between any character or the characters themselves until part 2.

Part 2, written from the perspective of Bird, Boy and Arturos daughter, included the only few chapters I really connected with. And even by then, it was only the first few chapters. Whereas the rest of Part 2 served as nothing more than an info dump by means of letters between Snow and Bird.
Lastly, my biggest problem with this book: the ending. As I read this book I was almost tricked into thinking I'd really like it. It seemed interesting, especially with all the mirror mystery happening and lets face it, I'm kind of a sucker for all the symbolism. But, all the while thinking I liked this book, I was also waiting for something big to happen. A climax. An incident. An explanation. Anything. Once I got the the last sentence of the book, I knew I was tricked into liking it, and that it was actually an utter disappointment. As a last grasp, I thought for sure the arrival and search for information about Boys father was going to be some brilliant moment that explained everything. Instead, it just lessened the acuity of the novel and shifted focus to something totally different than what the entire book was about.

Spoiler! I have put the text in white, HIGHLIGHT to read.
[[What I got was a jumbled up mess about some transgendered side story that at first, I thought would maybe clear up some of the mirror stuff that occurred throughout the book, but really it was just another piece of information that I really didn't need.]]

I'm assuming that the ending of this book is to leave it open for a sequel, which I have mixed feelings about. It's almost as though Oyeyemi lost her way half way through this book and didn't know where to go with it, so took the easy way out and ended it on a cliff just waiting to be finished. But, even knowing this I was generally very disappointed in this book. Though I didn't absolutely hate reading this book and parts of it were worth my while, the rest was utter chaos and a sheer disappointment. I would highly recommend you don't waste your time on this book, unless an all-encompassing sequel arrives to finish what Boy, Snow, Bird started

Helen Oyeyemi is a British novelist and playwright. She was born in Nigeria in 1984 and raised in London. She wrote her widely acclaimed first novel, The Icarus Girl, before her nineteenth birthday; she graduated from Cambridge University in 2006, where she studied social and political sciences. In 2013 she was included in the Granta Best Of Young British Novelists list.

BEST FRIENDS THROUGH ETERNITY

"Inspired by the true story of a teen who was killed at a railway crossing, the author weaves the tale of fourteen-year-old Paige, who, taking a shortcut alongside the tracks to avoid the school bullies, is tragically hit by a train and transported to a surreal world where she encounters Kim, who died seven years before. Convinced she is only dreaming, Paige must discover a way to return to her former life. Poignant, gripping, and full of unexpected twists and turns, Best Friends through Eternity will resonate with readers who have struggled with cultural identity, a sense of belonging, and the real meaning of home" goodreads.com

I received an ARC copy of this book from the publisher Tundra Books via Netgalley, for an honest review. I am not being paid in any way these are my honest and real opinions on this book. Best Friends through Eternity by Sylvia McNicoll is set to be released on February 10th 2015.

Best Friends through Eternity is categorized as children's fiction and young adult. It is written very simple, and short but it also deals with death so I understand it being listed under both categories. I snapped this up thinking it would be more like The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold but, it wasn't. This book is more like groundhog day, the main character Paige is struck by a train and is stuck in limbo where they allow her to return to earth over and over to fix her mistakes.

I did enjoy it even though it was a short read, it was a nice filler between the very long novels I have been reading, but it didn't really live up to the expectations I had for it. I found the real moral of this story is bullying, I think.. to be perfectly honest it isn't really that clear. There is a lot going on but at the same time all of it really isn't that important. I felt like I was being thrown a bunch of random information that made no impact on the actual story. Plus the title really doesn't fit with the book.

I gave this book three stars because I was able to read it quite fast, and even though it was probably a book I could have gone without reading it was ok. Short but sweet. One thing I did enjoy about this book, is that it was set in Canada!

Again thank you Netgalley and Tundra books for allowing me to read and review this book!

Riding The Odds

Riding the odds is a romance novel written by Lynda K. Scott, it releases on February 2nd 2015.

Riding the odds was given to me as an advanced reader copy by Entangled Publishing, for an honest review. I am not being paid in any way, these are my honest and real opinions on this book.

"Spaceship captain Tara Rowan has her secrets. One is her Rider, Zie. Zie is an organic symbiote—like a living tattoo—that enhances Tara's physical abilities, including superhuman strength and reflexes. The other is the past she's tried so hard to leave behind her. But it's not until oh-so-sexy Trace Munroe decides to blackmail Tara that she realizes her secrets aren't so secret after all...

Trace is a Holy Knight who does everything by the book. Desperate to find a missing princess, he'll do whatever it takes to rescue her and bring her kidnappers to justice. Including blackmail. Yet something about the feisty ship captain draws Trace in and stirs his desire—even if she is a wanted criminal. Because the last thing he needs is any complications...especially when he has his own secrets to hide."
-goodreads.com

I'll be honest I picked this book because of the cover, I thought it looked really interesting and beautiful. I had no idea it was a romance until I was half way through it and decided to go back and check. I don't usually go for romances, they make me feel uncomfortable, but this book was actually quite good even with all the romance. I really loved the characters in this book, especially Tara's rider Zie. I fell in love with Zie only a couple pages into the book. I even found myself rooting for Trace and Tara to fall in love! I also really enjoyed the settings, I am a sucker for spaceships, space and weird planets!

Now the downside, why this book lost a star is because I was really confused for the first couple chapters, the author didn't seem to explain a lot of the strange words that were put in the book, for example them using "Creator" as a bad word. Obviously, I eventually figured it out but at first I was like -- does this belong here? Is that a mistake? Why are they saying that? -- I don't like to be confused in books, I would rather the author explain what it means. The other thing I didn't like about this book, and this is based purely on my own preference is the fact that this story is told from two different view. I know a lot of people who enjoy that in books, but I didn't like the jumping around as much. Both Trace and Tara get a viewpoint.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! For those who love romance novels, or even someone who is looking for something new to read. Riding the Odds isn't jammed back full of romance, there is a lot of mystery, action and interesting details. I did enjoy this book, more than I thought I would!Thank you again Entangled and Linda K Scott for the ARC of this book!

The Maze Runner Series // COVER RELEASE!

FIRST - Has anyone else seen the cover for Pierce Brown's third book in the Red Rising trilogy? How beautiful is this!

I can't wait for this book to be released!

----------------------------------------------

At the beginning of this year I finished up book two and three for the Maze Runner series and I figured I would do a post on them. I have done a post already on the first book which I absolutely loved, you can check that one out if you liked. HERE
But lets take a look at book two and three!

Book two is The Scorch Trials by James Dashner
"Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn’t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch. There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die. The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch—the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them. Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off. There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers’ destruction—and they’re determined to survive. " - goodreads.com

Book Three is The Death Cure by James Dashner
"It’s the end of the line. WICKED has taken everything from Thomas: his life, his memories, and now his only friends—the Gladers. But it’s finally over. The trials are complete, after one final test. Will anyone survive? What WICKED doesn’t know is that Thomas remembers far more than they think. And it’s enough to prove that he can’t believe a word of what they say. The truth will be terrifying. Thomas beat the Maze. He survived the Scorch. He’ll risk anything to save his friends. But the truth might be what ends it all. The time for lies is over. " - goodreads.com

Now I had some high hopes going into these two books because the first book was so incredible. [the movie did not live up to the book!] I was unfortunately very disappointed. Both these book are worth only 1 to 2 stars out of five. It dragged on a lot, with very noticeable filler. To be honest James Dashner could have made this into a stand-alone book rather then a trilogy, that is how much filler was in these books. I feel that sometimes when the first book in a series is so good that publishers push the authors to pump out the next books for more money and doesn't give the author enough time to put some real thought, drama and detail into the books. This is exactly how I felt about book three in the Hunger Games series.

With all that said I highly suggest that you read the first book in the Maze Runner series, and stop there. The second and third books don't explain anything and are a waste of time sadly.

Golden Son - Book Review

"Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within.

A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart,Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown’s continuing status as one of fiction’s most exciting new voices." - Goodreads.com

If you haven't had a chance to read the first book in this trilogy - Red Rising, I highly suggest you do!

Oh Pierce Brown, how you have done it again with this amazing book of yours. The characters you have created for us, and this amazing world that I just want to be apart of. On Darrow's side of course! This book contains everything I look for in a good read and, it kept pulling me in for more. So many late nights and very tired mornings because I could not put it down. I found myself reading for it over the work that I actually needed to get done. How I wanted to read it fast and know everything but at the same time pace myself so it would never end! The fact that I could NEVER predict what was happening, even though I tried many times. Each chapter seemed to end on a cliffhanger where I just had to continue to the next one.

I have to admit that the second book, was better than the first. I already knew the world, had made a connection with the characters, that when the truth to some of the side stories came out, I was even more shocked. I made a real connection with Darrow, his pain, his thoughts, his love for Eo and Mustang, and especially his wants for a better life. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone looking for an amazing read.

I can not wait for the third book in this trilogy to be released. Good Job, Pierce Brown, on this masterpiece of a novel!

Book Depository

So I have come across an amazing site that sells books up to 30% off. Now here is why I find this site to be absolutely amazing, they ship everything world wide for FREE.

As someone who is from Canada, I know the terrible reality that is shipping and handling fees. For some reason Canada post charges way too much to have things shipped to anyone in Canada. So when I saw that I could by my books not only for a cheaper price but also have my shipping for free, I didn't even think twice. This site is where I purchased Ink and Rain by Amanda Sun. They both came in LESS then a week [which is amazing since they ship from the UK] and were in PERFECT condition.

I am lucky enough to be Affiliated with Book Depository!

Currently reading and TBR

I currently have way too many books on my to be read list and with each day passing it seems I add about five more. There are just too many great books out there that I have not had the chance to read. Being in university doesn't help because the majority of my time is taken up with classes and books for said classes. I try and fit in reading whenever I can, whether it's reading while walking to school, while taking a bath or just a few minutes before bed. It is great when you find that really good book that you just can't put down, you seem to read it faster then something you just aren't that interested in, such as my psychology textbook. I am currently sitting on a pile of about 75 book that still need to be read and if I can just stay off the booktube side of Youtube then hopefully that number will not climb that much until I have a chance to tackle it. On that note are there any books that you really enjoyed that you recommend to people? If so you should leave me a comment! I currently have a 2015 reading goal of 35 books which seems low but I figured I would go easy on myself since this is the first time I've ever set a goal for reading.

I am currently about 20% through the second book in the Red Rising trilogy - Golden Son by Pierce Brown. I am glad that I get to continue with Darrow's amazing adventure. On the down side the third book is yet to be released.

Yesterday in the mail I received two beautiful books from the bookdepository. Ink and Rain by Amanda Sun. I was really excited to pick these two books up, both are set in Japan and as you can tell from my blog I love Japan so I am totally all for anything to do with it. The premise of these books is very interesting as well. It is about a girl who is forced to move to Japan after her mother dies, there she meets a boy whose drawings come to life whenever they are around. Sounds like my type of book and I know I will be through them very fast, sadly they aren't very long but the books themselves are absolutely beautiful. There is drawings of dragons and other Japanese type drawings all over the pages. And the covers are breath taking.

After I devour these books, I believe I may jump into the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, I have heard nothing but AMAZING things about these books and I am excited to see what all the fuss is about!

Hopefully I will have a review of Golden Son soon to post!

Red Rising

I have two words for the book Red Rising – Absolutely amazing. Red Rising is the first book in the trilogy of the same name by Pierce Brown. This book follows a young man named Darrow who is a helldiver on planet Mars. In this book the people are split up into different colours – red, blue, green, pink, gold etc. etc. Darrow is a red. He is married to the love of his life Eo, and is completely happy with how his life is, he likes being a helldiver and doesn't see his life being anything different. Eo on the other hand sees the reds as slaves and yearns for something more.

Red rising being the first of the trilogy has a bit of scene setting and word explanation that has to happen before you get into the good things, so don’t put it down. There is love, betrayal, pain, plot twists, amazingly written action scenes and an amazing ending. I couldn’t put this book down, not even when I had to walk to my university. I love how this book follows a male main character and that the author didn’t hold back when it came to action or language. Red Rising is an adult dystopian novel.

I really enjoyed this book, and fell in love with the characters. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes dystopian style books, or anyone who is looking for something new to read.
I can’t wait to dive head first into the next book in the trilogy – Golden Son.

Have you read Red Rising? What were your thoughts?
